Travel Back in Time and get Rocking
Rock ‘n’ Roll is an energetic partner dance that developed with the musical style of the same name in the mid-20th century.
While it shares the same Swing-era roots as Jive and Modern Swing, Rock ‘n’ Roll is particularly known for its fast, bouncing rhythm and the playful nature of the relationship between the leader and follower.
Being a style of dance rather than a sequence, Rock ‘n’ Roll is easy to get started with just a few basic steps. Then, with the base nicely in place, you can upgrade to more complex, cheekier moves. The more moves you’ve got, the more fun the dance!
Rock ‘n’ Roll moves can be danced to a number of different music styles but always feel best when the track comes from those early days of rock in the 1940s and 50s. Indeed, Rock ‘n’ Roll dancers often immerse themselves in that era, taking on the music, moves, costumes, even the cars of that time.
Rock ‘n’ Roll is often danced socially, but can also be danced competitively, where the acrobatic nature really comes into play.

The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll
Rock ‘n’ Roll grew out of the cultural and musical explosion of the 1940s and 1950s in the United States.
As musicians like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Little Richard rose to fame, dancers took their cue from earlier swing styles like the Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug and blended it with African-American rhythm traditions to create a new, energetic dance.
The high-energy music encouraged movements with lots of flair, like spins, kicks and acrobatics. Coming off the back of World War 2, and being a musical and dancing style particularly attractive to teenagers, Rock ‘n’ Roll came to symbolize freedom and rebellion.
